Councilman Allan Domb to keynote Fifth Annual Philadelphia Condo Congress

 

Mini Trade Show for Multi-Family Housing Buildings at Friends Center September 20

Allan Domb, an at-large member of Philadelphia City Council and noted “Condo King”, is the keynote speaker for the Fifth Annual Philadelphia Condo Congress, a free mini conference and trade show for Philadelphians who live in and govern multi-family housing, including an estimated 900 condominium associations, an increasing slice of residential housing in the city.

“We are thrilled to welcome Councilman Domb and hear about his work on city council and how his efforts will impact not only the city at large, but our world of condo and co-op living,” said Joan Batory, chair of the Green Condo/Co-op Initiative, the event’s planning committee. “This year’s Condo Congress expands our traditional sustainability programming to include important sessions on how condo buildings and owners can navigate the sometimes confusing nature of the city bureaucracy, including speakers from the Departments of Revenue and Licenses & Inspections.” Batory added. 

In addition to Councilman Domb, speakers include Joseph D’iorio, Jr., Chief of License Issuance for the Department of Licenses & Inspections and Dave Dorman, Deputy Revenue Commissioner, Department of Revenue. The Congress includes four interactive educational workshops, including sessions. “The Condo Manager / Owner Guide to Navigating City Hall,” at with Commissioners D’iorio and Dorman will speak, will provide information on how building managers and homeowners can navigate the sometimes tricky world of city government. Representatives of PECO Energy will discuss how to make buildings and homes more energy efficient and a legal and legislative update will provide important updates on state and city legislation and judicial cases that have an impace on condominiums, coopertives and homeowner associations. The final session, titled “What’s Up with the Water?” will address the Flint, Michigan crisis. Philadelphia Water Department representatives will present the latest information on Philadelphia's drinking water standards relative to federal and other large US city standards and how plans to replace aging water pipes might impact service to multifamily buildings.

The Philadelphia Condo Congress includes a mini trade show with diverse exhibitions, networking sessions, and light refreshments. The Condo Congress is free and open to the public. The event is followed by an After Party for which there is a registration fee. When: Tuesday, September 20, 2016. Registration opens at 12:45 PM. Sessions will be from 1:00 PM to 2:00 PM and 4:30 PM to 5:30 PM. The Keynote Session with Allan Domb will start at 2:00 PM. The mini trade show will conclude at 4:30 PM. Attendees can come for one session or stay for the entire program. Attendees can register and pay online for an after-party at Tir Na Nog.

Sessions:
Breakout Session 1: How to Make Your Building A Super Saver Standout: Peco representatives will explain how their company can make your building more energy-efficient  by installing super efficient LED bulbs in individual units and common areas at no or greatly reduced cost.

Breakout Session 2: The Condo Manager / Owner Guide to Navigating City Hall: During this session, the Department of Licenses & Inspections will present information on new multifamily permits and inspections; the Office of Property Assessment will review how 2017 tax assessments were decided and the appeal process; and the Revenue Department will present information on the Homestead Program and the Senior Tax Freeze Program.

Breakout Session 3: What’s Up With the Water?: Can what happened in Flint, Michigan happen here? City Water Department representatives will present the latest information on Philadelphia's drinking water standards relative to federal and other large US city standards; how plans to replace aging water pipes might impact service to multifamily buildings.

Breakout Session 4: Legal & Legislative Affairs Update: Governor Wolf has signed two bills into law in the current session, and there are several others pending, that impact condos, co-ops and HOAs in the state. In addition, there have been various judicial cases and decisions that impact the industry.
