Hail to the Chief: Brian Friel, CIRMS, 2014 Chapter President

Mar 18, 2014

Each month, CAI will profile a member of the chapter's volunteer leadership. We start with the 2014 President of the Board of Directors, Brian Friel.

March is great month for our chapter: We had the NJ Council St. Patty's Day Happy Hour, the Chapter Conference & Expo is coming up, and there have been several education events.  Now that some of our 2014 events are kicking off and the year is off to a fantastic start, we thought it would be appropriate to highlight the President of our Chapter, Brian Friel.

When asked what two words he’d use to best describe himself, Brian said "energetic and motivated."  When asked by a few of his peers, the most common responses were "friendly" and "reliable" - two great things to be when you’re the President of the Pennsylvania & Delaware Valley Chapter of CAI.

Brian is a Sales Executive at Smith Insurance Associates, an independent insurance brokerage that specializes in comprehensive Insurance and Risk Management solutions for associations and other types of commercial real estate.  He began his involvement with CAI shortly after he joined Smith Insurance Associates in 2000.  Brian believes it’s important to be involved with CAI both locally and nationally, so he has attended several national CAI conventions and law seminars.  Prior to joining the board, he had served on various committees for the local chapter and participated in numerous insurance symposiums and seminars for the local chapter and its members. This year he proudly took over the gavel and he is actually the 4th member of the Smith Insurance staff to hold the position of Chapter President, preceded by Steve Smith Sr., Roger Perrymore (President while he was Partner at Bradford & Perrymore) , and Steve Smith Jr.

Brian grew up in Lansdale, PA and is one of eight children. He attended Lansdale Catholic High School and in 1993 he graduated from Pennsylvania State University, where he earned a degree in Marketing & Logistics.  Brian married his Senior Prom date, Kellie (Smith) Friel, and they are happy parents to three beautiful daughters.  Naturally, in his free time he enjoys supporting their pursuit of various sports and activities and he is currently coaching CYO soccer, helping with their volunteer efforts, and in any remaining free time, running.

Brian holds CAI’s Community Insurance & Risk Management Specialist (CIRMS) designation recognizing professionalism and dedication to the unique tasks of insurance and risk management services to community associations. Brian has also earned the Certified Insurance Counselor (CIC) designation and is an active member of the PAA East (Pennsylvania Apartment Association East, formerly the AAGP).

Working in insurance, he finds that his favorite part of the job is offering risk management advice and services that give communities the peace of mind that they are well protected from those "worst case scenarios".  When asked what the greatest honor has been in his career, he said that its a great honor each time that he receives a call because a current client referred him.

Brian looks forward to the remainder of this exciting year for our chapter and would like to thank everyone for their involvement and support of CAI.
